Only a Little While
In less than a month the baby boy that I held in my arms just a few short years ago will be married. And while I am so happy for him and excited about his future, I have also become very reflective about this moment.
You see, this planet moves at an amazing speed around our Sun. 365 days of the Sun coming up then disappearing over the horizon causes another year to go by. A few of those years turn into a decade and a few decades turns into what I am about to experience; the sober fact that we are only here for a little while. We only have a little while to hold our children before they grow up and start a life of their own. We only have a little while to love on our parents before they receive their promotion. And we only have a few short walks on the beach, romantic movies and dinners with our spouses before one of us leaves this world. While this may sound depressing and morbid, I hope that it causes each one of us to reflect and enjoy life.
When we begin to realize that life is about those “little while” moments, it will change our perspective. So what if I lost my job? I’ll get another one! But my children will only be young for a little while. Big deal if we didn’t get the house we wanted. It’s more important that we get to be together as a family because it’s only for a little while. The Book of James says that our life is but a “mist that appears for a little while, then vanishes”. Before that happens I encourage you to take a moment today and hold someone you love; if only for a little while.
